Israel Food Basket functions like a regular supermarket – you select your items and fill up your cart. The difference is that your purchase is then delivered to a needy family, in a dignified and discreet manner.
Israel Food Basket creates an emotional connection between the basket giver and recipient that hasn’t existed until now. Suddenly, your giving has a face; you’re buying food for a real family, just like you’d shop for your own family. We aren’t merely swiping our credit cards to donate and forgetting about it; we’re scrolling through food items and giving real thought to the family we’re shopping for. They have children just like mine; what would make my own children excited to receive? Every item is selected and given with love, to bring joy to another family.
This project is run in cooperation with the Mehadrin Express supermarket chain, which processes the orders, collects the products and delivers them to the families’ homes.
Israel Food Basket was established by the Kupa Shel Tzedaka of Ramat Beit Shemesh – one of the largest and oldest Kupat Tzedakah in Israel, which operates under the direction and supervision of the city’s rabbanim. The Kupa assists thousands of families each year, from all of the communities and sectors in Ramat Beit Shemesh, in the most dignified and discreet way – true matan b’seser.
The unique format of Chessed Express, which operates as part of a regular online supermarket chain, ensures that this is a true matan b’seser; the supermarket delivery men have no idea which of their packages are being delivered to a needy family.
The Gabbaim of the Kupa are in close, ongoing contact with each of the families in Ramat Beit Shemesh who require this basic food assistance. B’ezras Hashem, we plan to expand this project to other areas in the country, in cooperation with the local Kupot that know the local needy families and will supervise the food distribution in their region.
